On August 20th, UNFPA handed over equipment to Rwanda Association of Midwives and midwifery schools of the University of Rwanda, Ruli Higher Institute of Health Sainte Rose de Lima, and Kibogora Polytechnic. The equipment included: anatomical models commonly known as Maman Natalie’s, and related accessories, donated to Rwanda Association of Midwives to support the rollout of more than 50,000 Happy Birth Days project and IT equipment (laptops) to facilitate research and other academic activities in midwifery schools.

Since 2018, UNFPA & the Government of Japan has been collaborating to reduce maternal & child mortality in humanitarian settings in Rwanda. The Government of Japan supports UNFPA to implement SRH & GBV lifesaving interventions in refugee camps. Under the 2018 Japan Supplementary Project, UNFPA supported health system strengthening programs to ensure every pregnancy is wanted & every childbirth is safe. Various medical equipment has been procured to strengthen Maternal, Sexual, and Reproductive Health, Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response in Mahama camp including an ambulance to ease the referral of complicated obstetric & GBV cases to the hospital.

Since March 2020, UNFPA through the One UN in Rwanda is supporting the National COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan with a focus on continuity of sexual and reproductive health services, including the protection of the health workforce, addressing gender-based violence (GBV), and ensuring the supply of modern contraceptives and other reproductive health commodities.  Some of the UN-staff were deployed to Rwanda’s National Command Post Centre to support the Covid-19 response in their respective fields of expertise.

It create a friendly, safe and trustful platform availing evidence-based Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights information through a wide range of innovations. Urukundo Initiative is one of the Iaccelerator Phase 2 winners. iAccelerator is a mentorship driven acceleration programme, supporting young entrepreneurs with seed funding, training and skills development to generate innovative solutions in response to challenges related to sexual and reproductive health, sexuality education, family planning, maternal health and other population development issues.
