While the World celebrates the World Population Day (WPD) every July 11, this year’s celebration coincides with the 5th Population and Housing Census, where the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) will start enumeration to update data on core demographic, social and economic indicators.

The census will in turn inform the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of national and international development plans and programmes that the country has committed on, particularly the NST1, Vision 2050, and SDGs as well as the Africa Agenda 2063.

This WPD’s theme being “A world of 8 billion: Towards a resilient future for all - Harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all,” the World will need to reaffirm commitments and the urgency to put women and girls at the center of efforts to recover from Covid-19 and build forward and better.

Launched globally under the theme 'Seeing the Unseen: the case for action in the neglected crisis of unintended pregnancy”, the 2022 SWOP report is a wake-up call to recognize that unintended pregnancy is not only a women’s concern but a global crisis with global costs.

In Rwanda, the SWOP report was launched under the theme: “Addressing Teenage Pregnancy: The Call for Action”, where UNFPA and the Government of Rwanda through the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Gender and Family Planning, as well as development partners, and other partners pledged to stand up for the adolescent girls like Nyirahabimana, who, through ignorance about her body or lack of choice or both is condemned to a life of poverty when unintended pregnancy ends her education, and prevent them from fulfilling their potential.

Speaking at the launch, UNFPA Representative, Kwabena Asante-Ntiamoah said that the crisis of teenage pregnancy has gone on for too long and that it is now time to open our eyes, to see the unseen!

Midwives are the backbone of maternal health systems – delivering babies and much more.
Every day in every part of the world, midwives save the lives of women and babies and promote the health and well-being of entire communities.
They stand by women when they are most vulnerable. They fight daily to defend a woman’s human right to go through pregnancy and childbirth safely.
On 5th May 2022, under the theme, “100 Years of Progress the”, The Rwanda Association of Midwives (RAM)  joined the rest of the world to celebrate the International Day of the Midwife.
UNFPA expresses its deepest respect and appreciation for the extraordinary and life-saving work that midwives do. We celebrate your many achievements and honor your extraordinary contribution to humanity.

The Safeguard Young People Programme (SYP) is the flagship youth programme of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO). UNFPA envisions an East and Southern Africa where all adolescents and young people aged 10-24 are healthy, productive and empowered; free from sexually transmitted infections including HIV, unintended pregnancies, child marriages and gender-based violence and equipped with comprehensive knowledge and skills regarding their sexuality, rights, and health-seeking behaviours.

In Rwanda, the SYP programme has been implemented since May 2021, at the national level and in the 3 UNFPA supported districts - Rusizi, Nyamasheke and Karongi. The programme intends to greatly contribute to improved Sexual Reproductive Health status of young people by supporting youth and adolescents to access ASRH services, including Menstrual Health, Youth Friendly Services and Comprehensive Sexuality Education.
