Jean Pierre Musefano’s path to United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) can be best described as a journey - one that saw him pursuing a career as a professional driver. For the past 23 years, he has played a pivotal role in realizing the UNFPA operational goals. Musefano has not only facilitated mobility for UNFPA Representatives but has also made a profound difference in advancing the organization’s objectives.

In 1999, Musefano, a former OXFAM Quebec employee, made a decision to join the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN sexual and reproductive health agency, as an opportunity to contribute to global efforts aimed at improving maternal health, empowering women, and promoting family planning.

Musefano’s unwavering dedication has been evident - he has been an indispensable resource, not only as a senior driver but also a trusted confidant employee who also served as a logistics person throughout the years in the UNFPA Rwanda country office. Over the past years, he has developed deep relationships with the UNFPA Representatives and staff in Rwanda, extending a friendly ear, encouragement, and words of wisdom. Musefano’s presence provided familiarity and comfort, easing the transition of newly appointed representatives into the Rwandan environment. This enabled them to focus on their core mission of driving sustainable development for all.

As we gather to bid a heartfelt farewell to our esteemed colleague and dear friend, Jean Pierre Musefano, I am reminded that the strength of our organization lies not only in our collective mission but also in the remarkable individuals who bring that mission to life. For 23 years, Jean Pierre has been the unsung hero behind the scenes, ensuring the smooth journey of UNFPA Representatives and supporting our vital work in Rwanda. As he embarks on a well-deserved retirement, we celebrate not just the years of service but also the impact he has had on countless lives." Dr Natalia Kanem, UNFPA Executive Director

Dr Natalia Kanem, UNFPA Executive Director, praised Musefano's 23-year journey with the organization. The event took place during the staff dinner alongside the Women Deliver 2023 Conference.

Musefano’s hard work and dedication stand as a testament to the immense impact that individuals in seemingly "ordinary" positions can have on UNFPA's success. In Rwanda, UNFPA will never forget his dedication, knowledge, and unwavering commitment to improving reproductive health, promoting gender equality, and driving positive change.

For 23 years, it has been an honour and a privilege to serve as a senior driver at UNFPA, supporting the tireless efforts of our distinguished Representatives and being a part of this incredible organization's mission. Thank you, UNFPA, for being my home away from home for these remarkable 23 years. I will miss you all, but I am grateful for our unforgettable journey together. To my wife, she is not here, but I assure you that she has done a lot; she has helped me a lot. I thank her and my children for their patience and support toward fulfilling my career. Jean Pierre Musefano, a senior driver who served UNFPA Rwanda for the past 23 years

Although Musefano has retired, his next chapter involves farming and growing crops and taking care of his family. His story serves as a reminder that every role, no matter how humble, it has tremendous significance when performed with passion, integrity, and a genuine desire to make a difference. As UNFPA Rwanda bids farewell to a remarkable driver, they also celebrate his lasting impact on their collective journey towards a better future.
